this is but one example, Alaska used to be a fun loving little girl, but she lost her mother at a young age. Grief had changed her into a depressed teen, who abuses alcohol and drugs.

this is another example of grief changing someone. Miles doesn't want to do anything. he just lays around all day and even when the colonel tries to get him to eat he refuses.
"'Not much. I just walked until it got to cold then i turned back'" (149)
The colonel, Alaska's best friend and longest friend, was taking it the hardest. Grief hit him harder than anyone, for he "disapeared from school for 2 days walking, just wanting to be alone.
